ENEnglish Definition
The reduction in existing shareholders' ownership percentage resulting from the issuance of additional shares. Dilution occurs through equity offerings, exercise of stock options, conversion of convertible securities, or stock-based compensation. While dilution reduces ownership percentage, it may be acceptable if the proceeds are used to create value exceeding the dilutive effect. Anti-dilution provisions protect investors from excessive dilution.
