The stable, long-term and often controlling holder that supplies a company's strategic direction and continuity, as opposed to the dispersed portfolio investors in its free float. In project finance lenders treat the core owner's commitment — additional equity support, completion guarantees and the capacity to bridge a downside scenario — as a distinct layer of credit protection, since the balance-sheet depth standing behind the sponsor is frequently more decisive than the project's own cash flow.
