Its link to project finance is indirect but real: in payment chains with heavy cash movement — particularly cash-intensive construction and commodity flows — the risk of counterfeit notes is a sub-layer of anti-money-laundering and know-your-customer controls. One quiet rationale for routing corporate payments through bank transfer and escrow is precisely to push this physical-currency risk outside the chain, since a non-cash structure also anchors proof of payment in documentation should a dispute arise.
