A procedural step in litigation whereby a defendant voluntarily submits to the jurisdiction of a court for all purposes in the action, as opposed to a special appearance made solely to challenge jurisdiction. By entering a general appearance, the defendant waives the right to contest the court's personal jurisdiction over them. This distinction is significant in cross-border finance disputes where parties may wish to preserve jurisdictional objections.
