English Definition
The body of legal rights over creations of the human mind — patents, trademarks, copyrights, designs, and trade secrets — granting the holder exclusive use for a defined term. In technology-intensive projects — data centers, next-generation storage, environmental technologies — the operation of the project often depends on a licensed technology, so lenders closely examine the transferability of the license and the step-in rights that would apply on default. Where the technology's owner is a legal entity distinct from the sponsor operating the project, termination of the license can reduce the collateral to a functionally inert shell.
