English Definition
A bond issued in the Australian domestic market, denominated in Australian dollars, by a non-Australian issuer. The issuer usually swaps the proceeds back into its functional currency through a cross-currency swap, so the true motive is rarely a need for Australian dollars but the fact that the post-swap effective cost of funds undercuts the issuer's home market. The same basis-swap arbitrage underlies the way capital-intensive project sponsors diversify their funding base geographically, with the depth of the investor pool and issuance timing driving the decision.
