English Definition
The verb denoting that a debt instrument or obligation reaches its agreed term, so that the principal and any accrued interest become due; when the instrument matures the issuer's repayment obligation crystallises in fact. This moment is a critical threshold at which a refinancing need is triggered for the issuer. A large number of debts maturing at once — the concentration known as a maturity wall — can push even an otherwise sound borrower into a liquidity squeeze through refinancing pressure if market conditions have deteriorated in that window, which is why the timing distribution of maturities is far more decisive than any single maturity.
