English Definition
One of the most speculative grades, denoted Ca on the Moody's scale and CC on the Standard & Poor's and Fitch scales, where default is either imminent or already under way and the expectation of recovery is low; compared with the band above, valuation now rests on a liquidation scenario rather than on future cash flow. In project finance an instrument's descent to this level typically signals covenant breach, exhaustion of the reserve accounts and the onset of inter-creditor negotiation; at this stage the real value lies not in the coupon but in how enforceable, in the relevant jurisdiction, the lenders' step-in rights and their ability to realize the collateral prove to be.
