In credit rating, the group of speculative grades denoted Caa on the Moody's scale and CCC on the Standard & Poor's and Fitch scales, sitting well below the investment-grade threshold, where default risk is concrete and ongoing. In project finance the pricing of a bond in this band is set not by the coupon alone but by creditor priority in the capital structure, the reach of the security package and the recovery rate expected in a restructuring; indeed the investor base at this level consists of specialized funds that calculate on post-default control of the asset and its liquidation value rather than on interest yield, so the covenant architecture becomes more decisive than the coupon.
