English Definition
The net investment an economy or enterprise makes in new capital goods — machinery, plant, infrastructure and construction — that expands productive capacity; it is one of the principal engines of economic growth and productivity gains. In national accounts, gross fixed capital formation is among the most direct indicators of an economy's forward-looking appetite for investment. Project finance is, at the micro level, precisely the mechanism by which this capital formation is funded; the debt and equity financing of capital-intensive projects aggregates into a country's fixed capital formation, which is why a tightening of financing conditions directly slows the pace of investment.
