English Definition
An insurance company owned by a parent or group and established primarily to insure that group's own risks — the corporate embodiment of a captive-insurance structure. Rather than ceding its insurable risk to the commercial market, the group cedes it to its own captive, retaining the premium flow internally, accessing the reinsurance market directly, and tailoring cover for risks that standard policies exclude. In project financing large sponsors manage construction, delay, and business-interruption risk through a captive, and the jurisdiction where the captive is domiciled — offshore centres with favourable capital and tax regimes — is what sets the cost of the structure.
