English Definition
The date on which the price of shipped goods must actually be paid, under the terms of the contract or payment instrument; it may be tied to the shipment day, the presentation of documents, delivery, or, in usance letters of credit, a set number of days. In project financing the placement of this date governs the fine calibration of working capital and cash-flow timing, and the gap between the payment date and the date the goods begin to generate revenue creates a funding shortfall that must be closed by bridge finance or supplier credit. The length of a deferred-payment term also sets the duration of the implicit financing the supplier in effect provides, and hence the project's external borrowing need.
