English Definition
The plaintiff who conducts a class action on behalf of the class it represents. In US securities litigation the lead plaintiff — often the institutional investor with the largest loss — controls the selection of counsel and the settlement negotiation, and that appointment shapes the litigation's cost and duration. The contest to become lead plaintiff is not incidental, since the party steering the case effectively sets the terms of any settlement and the fee structure of counsel, which in turn bears on the class's ultimate recovery.
