English Definition
A suit brought by a representative on behalf of a group in the same legal position, whose outcome binds the members of that group; used synonymously with class action, though the emphasis here falls on representative capacity and on res judicata binding absent members. That members who never appeared are bound — subject in most systems to an opt-out right — is what makes the device efficient, but it also hands the defendant leverage: a global settlement can buy peace across the entire class. That binding effect sits at the centre of the defendant's settlement strategy.
