English Definition
The international standard industrial classification (ISIC) developed by the United Nations, which classifies all economic activities through tiered codes according to the goods and services they produce, and serves as the common language of national statistical systems and of many development finance institutions' sector reporting. In project finance the classification is no bureaucratic detail; development banks' sector exposure limits, climate-finance tagging and the eligibility of certain tax incentives can hinge on the ISIC code under which a project is placed, so positioning a borderline activity under the correct code can in practice determine access to financing.
