English Definition
The act of presenting a negotiable instrument — a cheque, bill or note — to the drawee for payment and converting it into cash, usually through the holder's bank forwarding the item via a correspondent to the payer. Completion of collection fixes the moment the instrument is honoured and the debt discharged, and until then the holder retains rights of recourse should the item be dishonoured. In cross-border project trade this mechanism forms the core of documentary-collection settlement outside letters of credit.
