English Definition
A written demand for payment of a debt due or overdue, typically one step in a graduated series from courteous reminder through formal notice to warning of legal action. The hardening of tone manages the creditor's tension between preserving the commercial relationship and reserving its legal rights, and in many jurisdictions service of a formal notice is a precondition for default interest to run and for the right of suit to arise. In project relationships this document marks the threshold from soft escalation to formal arbitration.
