English Definition
The primary commercial document issued by a seller to a buyer, stating the nature, quantity, unit price, and total value of the goods or services sold, and serving as the principal basis for customs valuation and letter-of-credit payment. In project financing, the commercial invoice is among the trigger documents for a drawdown on equipment supply; payment under a letter of credit depends on the invoice conforming exactly to the other shipping documents, because banks apply the doctrine of strict compliance in document examination, and the smallest discrepancy can suspend payment.
