A merchant that holds the goods in its own possession but sells them for the account of its principal, taking a commission; it differs from a commission agent in physically holding the goods and often enjoying wider discretion over the terms of sale. In project financing this figure stands out on the revenue line of agricultural and commodity projects in particular; marketing output through a commission merchant insulates the producer from direct buyer risk but cedes control over sale timing and price to the intermediary, moving revenue predictability into a layer that lenders scrutinise.
