English Definition
A broad term for the misuse of information systems for unauthorised access, data manipulation, fraud, or disruption of service, covering both external attack and the abuse of insider privilege. Its relevance in project finance lies in the exposure of operating assets that depend on SCADA and remote-monitoring systems — power plants, water and transmission infrastructure — to loss of production and therefore revenue in a cyber event. Because standard property and machinery-breakdown policies frequently exclude this risk, lenders require separate cyber cover and an incident-response plan; where the cover is conditioned on physical damage, pure data loss can fall outside it, which diligence must test.
