Bir akreditif işleminde, akreditif şartlarına ve ilgili teamül kurallarına tam olarak uyan ve bu nedenle bankanın ödeme yükümlülüğünü doğuran belgedir; belgelerin gerçek malı değil, yalnızca akreditif metnine uygunluğu esas alınır. Uygulamada bu uygunluk, katı belge denetimi ilkesine (strict compliance) tabidir: bir yazım hatası ya da eksik ibare dahi bankaya belgeyi rezervle reddetme hakkı verebilir. Uygulayıcı için kritik nokta, akreditif altındaki ödeme güvencesinin gücünün, malın teslim edilip edilmediğinden bağımsız olarak, belge uyumsuzluklarının (discrepancy) yönetimine bağlı olması; ihracatçının ödeme riski çoğu zaman fiziksel değil, belgesel bir risktir.
English Definition
In a letter-of-credit transaction, a document that fully complies with the terms of the credit and the applicable customary rules and therefore triggers the bank's payment obligation, the test being the document's conformity to the text of the credit rather than the actual goods. In practice this conformity is subject to the doctrine of strict compliance: even a typographical error or a missing wording can entitle the bank to reject the documents as discrepant. The critical point for the practitioner is that the strength of the payment assurance under a credit depends on the management of discrepancies, independent of whether the goods were delivered; the exporter's payment risk is often documentary, not physical.
