English Definition
The trade-correspondence abbreviation for "consignment," denoting an arrangement in which goods are delivered to an intermediary (the consignee) for sale while title remains with the sender. The financial importance of consignment lies in title staying with the sender until sale: this keeps the goods out of reach of the consignee's creditors if it becomes insolvent, but it also makes it harder for the consignee to finance the goods in its warehouse. In a project and equipment supply chain, consignment stock must be classified carefully as to whose balance sheet it appears on and whether it enters the lender's security pool, because pledging goods owned by another party is legally defective.
