English Definition
The party to whom goods in a shipment are sent and are to be delivered; named as recipient on the transport document, though in a consignment relationship it does not acquire title until a sale occurs. In documentary-credit transactions the consignee's identity and its exact match with the documents is critical to release of payment, since even a minor discrepancy gives the bank grounds to suspend it. In project logistics the consignee of heavy, oversized equipment is often not the SPV itself but an intermediary handling customs and site delivery, so the transport contract must state clearly at which point risk of damage passes and to whom.
