English Definition
A document evidencing that goods have been handed to a carrier for transport, proving the existence and terms of the carriage contract; in road transport the CMR consignment note is the international standard. Unlike a bill of lading, a consignment note is generally not a document of title, and therefore does not serve to transfer ownership by endorsement — a distinction that directly governs which document is tendered under a letter of credit. In the multimodal carriage of project equipment, issuing a separate consignment note for each leg makes it easier to establish which carrier is liable in the event of damage.
