English Definition
The aggregate of the debts of all a group's subsidiaries and associates, with intra-group debt eliminated, reflecting the net debt burden external to the group. Leverage that looks moderate at the single-entity level can prove far higher on a consolidated basis because debt is distributed across layers within the group; this hidden leverage is the layer credit analysis most often skips. In project finance a sponsor's consolidated debt constrains its capacity to grant fresh guarantees to a new project, so lenders, notwithstanding the limited-recourse structure, test the sponsor's group-level consolidated debt-service burden in a separate sensitivity.
