English Definition
Government bonds issued with no maturity — their principal never to be redeemed — paying the holder a fixed coupon in perpetuity; the name derives historically from debt the British government consolidated. Because the principal is never repaid, the bond's value is tied entirely to the ratio of its coupon to the prevailing market rate, making it exceptionally sensitive to interest-rate volatility. Though not used directly in project finance, this perpetual structure supplies the conceptual basis of the perpetuity mathematics used to discount very long-dated infrastructure revenues, and serves as the intuitive anchor for a terminal-value calculation.
