English Definition
The property of a currency being convertible into another at a free-market rate without official restriction, assessed separately for current-account and capital-account transactions. In cross-border project finance this is among the quietest yet most destructive layers of risk: a project generating revenue in local currency that cannot convert for profit repatriation or hard-currency debt service may be unable to pay lenders even while profitable on paper. Political-risk insurance and offshore reserve accounts are frequently structured precisely to close this convertibility exposure.
