Bir şirketin değer üretiminin ve uzmanlığının yoğunlaştığı, stratejik olarak vazgeçemeyeceği asıl faaliyet alanıdır. Proje finansmanında önemi, sponsorun temel işinin proje ile ne ölçüde örtüştüğünün, kredi verenler için sessiz bir risk göstergesi olmasıdır: temel işinin bitişiğinde bir proje geliştiren sponsor, tümüyle yabancı bir alana giren sponsordan daha güvenilir bir operasyonel taahhüt taşır. Sıkıntı hâlinde sponsorun projeyi ayakta tutmak için ek sermaye koyma isteği de çoğu kez projenin onun temel işine ne kadar yakın durduğuna bağlıdır.
English Definition
The principal field of activity in which a company's value creation and expertise are concentrated and which it cannot strategically abandon. Its importance in project finance is that how far a sponsor's core business overlaps with the project is a quiet risk indicator for lenders: a sponsor developing a project adjacent to its core carries a more credible operational commitment than one entering wholly unfamiliar territory. In distress, a sponsor's willingness to inject further capital to keep a project alive often depends on how close the project sits to that core business.
