English Definition
An entity that collects, stores, and supplies to lenders data on the credit history of individuals and businesses; in the United Kingdom these agencies, which perform the credit-bureau function, carry this name and are subject to strict regulation regarding the processing of consumer data. In assessing an application, lenders verify the applicant's declaration and confirm existing obligations through the report obtained from these agencies. Because the accuracy of the data the agencies hold directly determines the quality of the credit decision, an error in the records can unfairly narrow a borrower's access; regulation therefore grants individuals the right to challenge and correct their own records.
