English Definition
The currency in which a commercial transaction is priced and invoiced, which sets from the outset who bears the exchange-rate risk in trade and the supply chain. The choice of invoicing currency is often a quiet reflection of bargaining power; the stronger party imposes its own currency and passes the exchange-rate risk to the other side. In project financing, how well the transaction currency of equipment and service purchases aligns with the project's revenue and debt currencies determines how exposed construction cost is to exchange-rate volatility, and thus how large a contingency budget must be held.
