English Definition
The net of credit and debit entries in the current account — trade in goods and services, primary and secondary income — expressed as a surplus when positive and a deficit when negative. It summarizes whether an economy is a net saver or a net borrower vis-à-vis the rest of the world. For project finance a chronic deficit raises the expectation of currency depreciation and convertibility pressure, which sharpens the negotiation over who bears exchange-rate risk in long-dated contracts and to which index the tariff is escalated.
