English Definition
The principal section of the balance of payments that records flows of goods, services, primary and secondary income between a country and the rest of the world, forming — with the financial account — one half of a double-entry system that sums to zero. A deficit on the current account is necessarily matched by an equivalent net capital inflow on the financial account. This identity carries a practical caution for project finance: the imported-equipment component of large infrastructure widens the current-account deficit, even as the foreign direct investment those projects attract appears as an offsetting financial-account entry.
