English Definition
The condition in which an economy's current-account foreign-exchange receipts exceed its payments, placing it in a net-lending position toward the rest of the world, with the surplus reflected in reserve accumulation or capital outflow abroad. A persistent surplus often implies a strong reserve buffer and a comparatively stable currency. Project finance reads this as an environment where sourcing foreign exchange and repatriating profit should be relatively frictionless; yet where the surplus rests on a single commodity export, the commodity price cycle can quietly reprice country risk.
