English Definition
A measure expressing the balance of payments on current transactions — the net of flows in goods, services, primary and secondary income — and it is this current balance that everyday usage often shortens to the balance of payments. It is distinguished from the below-the-line financing entries of the capital and financial account by reflecting the economy's real interaction with the rest of the world. In project financing the direction of this balance offers a structural reading of a country's capacity to generate foreign exchange, and persistent deterioration reprices the exchange-rate and transfer risk of import-dependent investments.
