English Definition
The party that owes money or a defined performance to another — the creditor — forming the payment-obligated end of a debt relationship. In project financing the debtor is typically a single-purpose entity (SPV), a structure that legally enables the limited-recourse principle by insulating the sponsor's other assets from the project's debt. The identity of the debtor may look like a technical detail, but because it determines which pool of assets a creditor can reach on default, the true scope of the security package is drawn at the boundary of the debtor's balance sheet.
