English Definition
A document issued by the party holding possession of goods — a carrier, warehouse operator or agent — instructing that the specified goods be released to a named person, distinguished from a bill of lading in that it is a delivery instruction rather than a negotiable document of title. Its significance in project procurement and letter-of-credit settlement lies in synchronizing physical release of goods with payment or financing terms, since presentation of the delivery order is frequently the moment that actually triggers the importer's right to clear customs and the accompanying transfer of insurance and risk.
