English Definition
A composite index that merges the sixty-five companies making up Dow Jones's industrial, transportation and utility averages into a single price-weighted average. Its price-weighted construction lets high-priced shares move the index disproportionately, which weakens it as a portfolio benchmark relative to market-cap-weighted indices. For infrastructure and capital-intensive investors the composite is a convenient read on the three sub-sectors moving together, though it is not used directly in deriving a cost of equity, where cap-weighted sector indices remain the reference.
