A price-weighted index combining the share prices of thirty large publicly traded US companies, and the market's most frequently cited barometer. Its price weighting makes the composition methodologically contentious, since a single high-priced share can carry more weight than a company of far greater market capitalization. For project sponsors contemplating access to capital markets, what matters is less the index level itself than the general risk appetite it reflects and whether the issuance window it signals is open.
