A historical index tracking the shares of twenty transportation firms spanning rail, air, sea and logistics, read alongside the industrial average as a confirmation signal in Dow theory. Because transportation responds early to the economic cycle, the average is often treated as a leading indicator. In financing transport infrastructure and asset-heavy logistics projects, the valuation of sector equities indirectly frames the equity return an investor will demand, and therefore the project's cost of capital.
