English Definition
The potential loss amount a party would face if an adverse scenario materializes — the size of the position at risk. Unlike the probability of risk, exposure focuses on the magnitude of the loss. In project financing the lender's downside exposure is bounded by the security package, completion guarantees and reserve accounts, while the sponsor's is capped at its equity; the entire purpose of a limited-recourse structure is to allocate, in advance and precisely, where the loss stops between the parties in the bad case.
