English Definition
The second or copy version of the consignment note accompanying a shipment, issued to be kept in the records of the parties — consignor, carrier and consignee — and serving as evidence on delivery, in a dispute or in an insurance claim. Unlike a bill of lading, a consignment note typically is not a document of title, that is, it does not represent ownership of the goods; this distinction matters in finance, since it does not provide the security function that a negotiable document affords. In international trade finance, when choosing the documents to be presented under a letter of credit, this difference is weighed with care because it determines whether the transport document is collateral or merely proof of delivery.
