English Definition
The portion of banknotes issued by a central bank that is not backed by gold or other physical reserves but by government securities and the bank's creditworthiness. Historically, the fiduciary issue represented the difference between total currency in circulation and the gold reserves held by the central bank. In modern fiat currency systems, effectively all currency issuance is fiduciary in nature.
