English Definition
In banking, the period between the deposit of a cheque and the actual availability of the funds, during which both the payer's and payee's accounts may simultaneously reflect the amount. In capital markets, float refers to the number of shares available for public trading. The term also describes the decision to allow a currency to be determined by market forces rather than a fixed exchange rate.
