English Definition
A charterparty delivery term specifying that the freight rate excludes the costs of loading and discharging, which are borne instead by the charterer or cargo owner. The shipowner is responsible only for the sea carriage, while terminal and handling costs pass to the counterparty. In capital-intensive projects moving heavy equipment, an FIO term shifts handling risk and cost onto the project company; in jurisdictions with weak port infrastructure this item becomes a friction point that quietly erodes the assumed transport budget and lengthens the completion schedule.
