English Definition
The division of a financial institution comprising the revenue-generating units in direct contact with clients and markets — trading desks, sales, corporate finance and asset management — distinct from the middle office that processes transactions and the back office that handles settlement and accounting. In project finance and corporate advisory the team that structures the deal sits here. A structural tension follows: rewarding the front office on return and volume creates a conflict of interest with the middle and back office that price risk and police limits, and where that separation weakens, control gaps typically go unnoticed until a loss has already crystallised.
