English Definition
The amount paid to a carrier for transporting goods from one point to another, borne by either the seller or the buyer depending on the delivery term. Freight rates fluctuate with the balance between vessel capacity and demand and are, in some markets, separately priced through freight derivatives. In capital-intensive projects sourcing large equipment from distant jurisdictions, freight is a cost item often assumed fixed but in fact volatile; which party the delivery term (Incoterm) assigns the freight to determines, beyond the budgeted capital expenditure, who carries the shipping-market risk.
