Funding costs are the expenses incurred by a financial institution or borrower to obtain the capital needed to finance its lending, investment, and operational activities. For banks, funding costs include interest paid on deposits, interbank borrowings, and bond issuances. These costs are a primary determinant of lending rates and net interest margins, and they fluctuate with prevailing market interest rates, credit spreads, and the institution's own creditworthiness.
