English Definition
A court order directing a third party, typically a bank or employer, to withhold money owed to a debtor and pay it directly to the creditor to satisfy a judgment debt. The third party holding the funds is known as the garnishee and becomes legally obligated to comply upon service of the order. Garnishee orders are a key enforcement mechanism in civil debt recovery proceedings across common law jurisdictions.
