English Definition
A financial metric that measures the proportion of a company's capital structure financed by debt relative to equity, commonly expressed as total debt divided by total equity or total debt divided by total capital employed. Lenders and credit analysts use gearing ratios to assess financial leverage, debt capacity, and default risk. Covenants in loan agreements frequently specify maximum gearing ratio thresholds that the borrower must maintain throughout the facility's tenor.
