English Definition
A principle of maritime law whereby all parties to a sea voyage proportionally share losses resulting from voluntary sacrifices of cargo or expenditures made to preserve the vessel and its remaining cargo from a common peril. The doctrine, codified in the York-Antwerp Rules, requires that the sacrifice be intentional, reasonable, and successful in averting the threat. General average declarations trigger complex adjustment processes involving surveyors, average adjusters, and insurers.
